This, by far, was my celebrated of all of the Well-organized Mario cartoons that were produced, even if it did have the most un-original title ever (the fact that the number 3 is in the title kind of makes it humorous) .

It is a very fun note, and is based rather closely on the 3rd Elegant Mario game from the current NES. This had some very, very memorable episodes, and what I really liked about it was the presentation of the various powers that the Mario Bros. could employ in the proper game.

Now, this was a indicate produced for kids, so if you are an adult, and didn’t inspect this when it was originally on, you may want to bypass it now, as it’s something that you probably won’t accumulate mighty entertainment in at this point (with maybe the exception of anyone who is an Low Tidy Mario fan, partiuclarly of the 3rd game, but somehow missed this exhibit the first time around) .

As far as I can lisp, all of the episodes are intact, attractive noteworthy in there entirety.

There is, of course, the screech of the disagreeable Milli Vanilli episode, in which Mario, Luigi, the Princess, and Toad all go to the ‘real world’ to perceive their concert, and the music group gets kidnapped by King Koopa. Now, it is just that the music has been changed. In the new airing of this episode, Milli Vanilli are shown on stage performing “Blame it on the Rain”. However, after the whole lip sync scandal broke out, this episode was re-edited with generic music in the area of the previous song. Unfortunately, this proved to earn the concert scene create microscopic sense because the generic music doesn’t even have any lyrics, and yet Milli Vanilli are shown on stage curious their mouths and singing (or, lip syncing, if you occupy) . Then, Koopa shows up to kidnap them, and makes a comment saying “Blame it on King Koopa”, which is a joke that no longer makes sense in the edited version.

There’s also a scene later in the episode where after being kidnapped, Milli Vanilli are supposed to do a private concert for Koopa’s daughter, Kootie Pie (a.k.a Wendy, as she is known in the game.. the Koopa kid’s names were different in the game and cartoon) . Milli Vanilli point out that they have no benefit up band. In a rescue attempt, Mario, Luigi, Toad, and the Princess disguise themselves as a succor up band to encourage rescue them. The joke here is supposed to be that none of them know how to play any instruments, so the music is supposed to sound awful with Milli Vanilli singing over it as they normally would. Unfortunately, this has also been changed, and oddly with the same generic music from earlier in the episode. So, the same music that everyone was exasperated about and dancing to at the concert is now supposed to sound tainted to everyone (except Kootie Pie, who is enjoying it) .

It is honest that the edited version is the one on this residence. However, contrary to what another reviewer has posted, aside from the changes that I’ve listed above, everything else seems to be intact (at least as far as I can remember.. it has been years since I’ve seen this on TV) . That other reviewer states that all references to Milli Vanilli are removed, and that is not fair.

The name “Milli Vanilli” is mentioned frequently throughout the episode, and the Princess is even wearing a shirt that has their name on it. It is proper that King Koopa at one point does refer to them as “Humorous the Willies”, but that’s because he keeps messing up the name of the band and his kids have to support correcting him.

Sorry for the long explanation for this one episode, but I opinion this was considerable to justify for die hard fans of the indicate who remember this episode and are debating if they should fetch it or not.

The DVD presentation is a mixed bag. The menus of Discs 1 and 2 are nice. They are region up to stare like the Mario 3 game. They feature Mario and Luigi respectively, and in both cases, it shows the character from the side, as if in the video game, and they hit a “? ” trace block, causing things on the menu to change/happen when you produce a selection. It is nicely place up.

Where the DVD disappoints (though, not suprisingly) is in the quality of the video. It has not been remastered, and there are even some brief parts (at least in a couple of the episodes I’ve watched so far) where it looks like the masters these were copied from may have been damaged to some degree. I noticed this wound swear in the final episode (or two episodes, if you count the fact that each one is made of 2 smaller stories) . There are a couple of points where the conceal honest goes gray for a second. And it’s not my personal disc, other people have had the same predicament (apparently the master was indeed damaged, and from what I have heard there is nothing that Bawl Factory can do about it) .

The general video quality isn’t suprising though, since most of the previous Weep Factory releases like the Mario Neat Reveal and Captain N have not been remastered either. But, unexcited, the video quality does knock down my review by a couple of stars. And the fact that the one episode has some afflict is annoying.

The 3rd disc has some extra features, including character descriptions, and explanations about various aspects of the display. There is some racy stuff, but is does secure to be resplendent redundant. While they are nice enough, the feature easily could have been split up and establish on the first two discs. The total running time of them all doesn’t seem to add up to enough to warrant a whole separate disc. I deem they did this honest to gain it seem like you are getting more than you really are.

Still, all in all the cartoon is a lot of fun, so if you are a fan of Mario, and if you watched this reveal encourage in the day, I do recommend picking it up.

Not only do I savor this point to objective as powerful as I did when I was a kid, but my son – who shares my Wii with me and plays the new games in the Mario franchise like Mario Galaxy, Spruce Shatter Bros. Brawl, and Mario Strikers – really enjoys the expend of these same characters in these short cartoons with very basic plots. This is not ample storytelling, and the DVD state production could have outmoded some more pain, but the cartoons themselves are overwhelmingly cute and toothsome… I succor you to ration the cuteness because it’s very easy to earn too powerful TV time.

P.S. It seems as though Nintendo has severely drifted away from using the koopalings in favor of Bowser, Jr. If I hadn’t grown up so attached to the 7 koopa kids in SMB3, Neat Mario World, and some other games, maybe I wouldn’t be pleased them so considerable, but I consider they are feeble very well in these cartoons. If you like them too, obtain it known!

Great to finally fill this on DVD. Now how do I vote to have The Reincarnation of Peter Proud released to DVD?

Ray Bradbury + Rod Steiger, what could be better. This is one of my all-time current movies, a collection of Bradbury short fantasies. Wonderfully dramatized, all associated with this production are masters at getting it impartial good. The mood created is both eerie and keen. I highly recommend it, and join in urging production of the DVD.

The animation is from one of the the lowest points in Hanna-Barbera’s career – bad by today’s standards. The DVD features are very bare bones. Detached, if you watched these cartoons in the 1970’s & 1980’s they are a must-have item – and they peaceful preserve the kids entertained today without some of the violence you contemplate in today’s cartoons.

-The Ballad of Zan & Jayna – A wild and wacky music video celebrating the Wonder Twins, and of course, their pet primate Gleek!

SHOW HISTORY:

1973 saw the fresh Superfriends point to, featuring the heros followed by non-powered kids Wendy & Marvin, and their pet Wonderdog. There are not too many cartoons in that series, and they were repeated quite a bit on and off until 1977’s All-New Superfirends Hour came along. That is the indicate where the tag-along teens were first replaced by the Wonder Twins, Zan & Jayna, and their space-monkey Gleek. In 1978, the explain continued, retitled as simply Superfriends. That season is the one which aired the episodes announced today for DVD release. At the same time, Challenge of the Superfriends was running adjacent to this, featuring the episodes of the Justice League of America vs. The Legion of Doom. All 16 of *those* episodes are already on DVD in Challenge of the Superfriends – The 1st Season. Since they call that “the first season” and the current title “the second season”, we honestly can’t speak if Warner means to ignore the 1973 Wendy/Marvin/Wonderdog installments totally.

Zan, Jayna, & Gleek continued in 1979’s World’s Greatest Superfriends, with a few unique episodes mixed with repeats of the older ones. 1980 saw more than 60 unique shorts (under 10 minutes each in length) made featuring unprejudiced the heroes, with no teenage sidekicks, and those were combined with stale episodes into a novel Superfriends Hour explain. But then that display was shortened to a half-hour for 1981-83 and the exhibit went under various names, accompanied by maybe about two dozen more modern shorts…some of which were never aired in the new rotation, but which aired later in syndication. Then, in 1984, ABC wanted to revitalize the series, and that’s when they did Shipshape Friends: The Legendary Clean Powers Exhibit, using the unique DC Comics name from the action figure lineup that was being marketed at the time. The cartoons mainly featured the heroes from the toy line, so now Cyborg (from the “Teen Titans” comics) and Firestorm (from “Firestorm: The Nuclear Man”) were on the team. There were only 15 episodes produced under that name, and then they finished up the SuperFriends’ TV race with The Clean Powers Team: Galactic Guardians. That 1985 note had more of the heroes who hadn’t been seen the previous year, especially fan favorites who had mostly been missing since Challenge, like Flash, Green Lantern, and Hawkman. There were approximately 10 episodes of that reveal.

I enjoyed seeing how the real-life challenges were overcome, e.g., Sera’s dealing w/ the novel one. The youngster I was watching with wanted to go to to the beginning (since you can’t rewind a DVD) . Inside I was “up in arms” because I wanted to behold the entire movie. So I decided I needed to consume my maintain copy. And I’ll fraction it w/ some other young ones… & not-so-young… because it’s a ravishing sage.

The day this movie came out I walked fifteen minutes to the store and encourage objective to secure it. And it was definitely worth it. I can’t close watching it. I am a total Land Before Time fan, with every single volume (including the vow along videos) and I have to say this is one of the best ones. Guido is hilarious and adorable. I was disappointed that Pterano didn’t near serve though. Even my sister, who never really liked that character, was wondering why he wasn’t in this movie.(I really hope he comes attend while I’m level-headed young.) The songs are a work of genius, especially Flip, Flap & Soar. In my notion it’s the best Land Before Time song written. The beat is really fun and uplifting. This movie is definitely worth adding to your collection!

The feast of the title doesn’t purchase station until well into the film. In fact, the majority of the film is spent telling the anecdote of 2 godly sisters and the choices they made in life. Both sisters passed up moral treasure and the promise of success in order to remain faithful to their religious beliefs. Instead they pass their lives assisting their minister father and carry on his work after his death. They continue their detached lives past mid-life until one of the sisters’ worn suitors sends them a Parisian refugee, Babette. Babette spends 14 years with the sisters as cook, her only link to her passe life being a lottery trace that a friend in Paris renews for her every year. One day she wins the lottery and decides to consume the money to prepare a sumptous dinner for the sisters and their tiny congregation. More than honest an epicurean delight the feast is an outpouring of Babette’s gratitude.

If the position sounds thin, be assured it’s anything but. The account is as rich and satisfying as the feast Babette prepares. We gawk the magnificent romances that do for each sister and understand their reasons for turning their suitors away. We peer the lives the sisters, and their men, have led after making their decision. The feast comes at a time when the sisters are asking themselves questions that they never voice: Did they accomplish the correct decision all those years ago? Was it worth it? Reassurance comes in an unexpected and exquisitely romanitc plan.

This film is such a improbable example of what happens when filmmakers are involved in telling a friendly legend and telling it well. It doesn’t follow a ‘formula’ or cater to a demographic and is a perfect example of why independent and foreign films are so remarkable more satisfying than Hollywood movies.

For years I had heard that this was a beneficial movie, but I resisted seeing it. How could a Danish movie about a dinner be all that compelling? I finally broke down and rented it – and watched it, scared. This is truly a colossal film.

The epic is simple. Two pious Danish sisters hire a French maid, Babette, out of a sense of charity. Fourteen years later, Babette wins the lottery. Out of her winnings, she proposes to attend the sisters and their fellow religionists a meal.

The film is simple. And like all things that are truly simple, it is a very, very rich feast.

The film can be enjoyed on many levels, but it is an overtly Christian film; and the feast is the Lord’s Supper. Babette’s gift to the sisters and their community is the gift of grace. Unasked for, unearned, and of inestimable value.

The sisters were daughters of a stern Protestant who had formed a devout community. When the sisters were young and lovely, they were each tempted by the chance to have spacious savor and success outside their community. But they remained precise to their father and their faith. After their father died, they carried on with their faith community. But as the years passed by, bickering and dissension space in.

One rainy day, there is a knock on the door and Babette appears in their doorway. She has a letter of introduction from one of the sister’s obsolete admire, and they choose to lift her in. Babette quietly makes herself primary to the sisters and the entire village. One day, she wins the lottery, and the sisters engage that she will now leave them. Before leaving them, however, she insists on serving them a qualified French meal.

The meal itself is the center of the film, and during that meal all the threads of the film are richly woven together. The pious sisters and their community finally learn the just depths of faith – something which is more than fair what we hold, but rather also reflects what we do and the care for with which we do it. They are twelve to supper, and that number is no accident. Nor is the grace that flows through that meal. Any Christian can enjoy its significance. And anyone who loves the Eucharist can only smile in joy, when one of the guests identifies the main dish as “Caille en Sarcophage” (Quail in a sarcophagus.) He retails a fable of the time he ate this astonishing meal in a delicate Parisian restaurant. The other guests smile, but miss his drift. And he exclaims, “But this really *is* Caille en Sarcophage!” They aloof do not understand, but the meal works its magic nonetheless.

This is a film of the sacramental vision – God’s rich treasure reaching out to us body and soul.

This has to be the greatest movies ever produced. It has everything you want, CIA agents, Killers, Aliens, Murdercycles, Psychics, and Diminutive Alien Balls that explode. If you plan ALIENS was suited, then this is the movie for you! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time the movie was playing on TBS. This is sooo worth the [amt]. I mean, the alien can site the amount for firepower his gun shoots! One time he blows up a truck, and the other time he only wants to stun the guy. Oh by the arrangement, i jumped out of my seat when the Murdercycle jumped out at the group from inside a building. He is a frigid blooded killer. But that is unbiased some of the action of this action packed riveter. HOpe to eye you all at the Murdercycle MOVIES. prick yee for life!

I’ve seen hundreds of Sci Fi/Horror movies over the years. This is one of those you’ll wonder whether you’ve watched it or not a few years down the road. You honest can’t remember.

This is an proper adaptation of the Gustave Flaubert modern of the same name. Isabelle Huppert is satisfactory as the central character, Emma, a prosperous farmer’s daughter, who marries a doctor, Charles Bovary (Jean Francois Balmer) . He is a kind and gentle soul who adores her and wants nothing more than to create her tickled. The pickle is that he does not know how. Even Emma does not really know what would beget her gratified.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Madame Bovary! Click Here

This is the fable of Emma Bovary and her melancholy, wasted, shallow life. She is a woman who on the surface seems to have everything, an adoring, doting husband, a dazzling, healthy daughter, an gorgeous well appointed home. Yet, she is glum. She loathes her husband, finding him pedantic and monotonous. She has limited time for her daughter and seems to have tiny motherly instincts. What worldly goods she has never seem to ber enough.

Seeking fulfillment, she takes lovers who always seem to fail her in the demolish. She mistakes passion for appreciate and never fails to be disappointed when that worship turns out to be fleeting, blind to the esteem that exists under her very gain roof. As her unhappiness and dissatisfaction grow, so does the beauty of her wardrobe. Beautifully gowned and accessorized, Emma Bovary is as comely as she is shallow. She spends what she does not have on passing fripperies, only to have her world eventually approach crashing down around her. She takes the easy blueprint out of her self inflicted misery and, in doing so, consigns those who had the wretchedness to truly care for her to a doomed existence.

Claude Chabrol deftly directed this spellbinding period share, exacting incredible performances from the entire cast. Isabelle Huppert is perfectly cast as Emma Bovary with her wintry beauty and gives a performance that is on the money. Jean Francois Balmer is also primary for his portrayal of her doting and supportive husband. This is an well-behaved, value priced film, one that is well worth having in one’s collection. Period allotment lovers will especially luxuriate in this film.

This film is a French adaptation of Gustave Flaubert’s classic yarn of human bondage, “Madame Bovary.”

I expected this adaptation to be better than others I have seen simply because it was done by the French, but sadly the film does not own up to Flaubert’s modern work. Isabelle Huppert does a so-so job as the lead character, the colossal sufferer, Madame Bovary. Huppert does not reveal enough passion and emotion for my taste though, the new character is consumed by suffering and desperately stabs at whatever get of relief comes her device, but Huppert doesn’t quite salvage any depth out of this performance. She looks blooming in her period costumes however. Madame Bovary succumbed to adultery, debtful spending habits and even suicide while being married to Dr. Bovary and never feeling passionately glad with her life. The character is both the ultimate victim of her beget circumstances and that of the stigma society held over women of her time. In the classic unusual she screams for thought and compassion but here Huppert only manages to mosey a selfish and self-absorbed creature lacking any decent humanity.

Contrasting to the Madame is Dr. Bovary, played decently by Jean-Francois Balmer, who manages to bring a sorrow to the dutiful man who cowers at the Madame’s feet. Malavoy is sweet and hardworking mighty as I imagine the fresh character to be and also sadly unsuspicious of his corrupt wife’s activities at his expense. The enigmatic and suave character of Rodolphe Boulanger is played by the comely and convincing Christophe Malavoy. Malavoy is seductively charming and maliciously inferior at the same time, the perfect match for Mrs. Bovary!

I enjoyed this film for the French pleasing value but feel the need to dust off my obsolete classic unique and re-read the legend as written by the master, Flaubert. I like the message contained in this record about the sin of excess and lack of reason tedious decisions, interestingly enough this 1856 unique could consume a few more readings in today’s world. The film is grand but the unusual is Titanic, delight in both for the experience.

Mario Bava was one of the most underrated filmmakers of the 20th century. So it’s appropriate that the first volume of the “Mario Bava Collection” (or “Bava Box”) was one of the best releases of the last year, and reintroduced us to classics of Bava’s that had fallen out of notion. The second volume impartial continues that tradition, with huge chunks of classic, stylish dismay.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Bava Box Set, Vol. 2! Click Here

“Baron Blood” begins the collection — Baron Otto Van Kleist was a savage, substandard guy who liked to torture people for fun (reflect Vlad Tepes), until a witch’s curse set aside him out of commission. Centuries later, his descendent Peter (Antonio Cantafora) returns to his family’s gothic castle, and decides that he and visiting student Eva (Elke Sommer) will recite the incantation that will return “Baron Blood” to the world. Of course, he actually DOES return, and soon Peter, Eva and Peter’s uncle are forced to battle his psychotic, deformed ancestor.

“Lisa and the Devil” is more or less what it sounds like, with our heroine Lisa (Elke Sommer) a tourist going through Italy. She encounters some freaky folklore moving a local painting of the Devil and the Unimaginative — and a man (Telly Savalas) who eerily resembles the painted Satan. When her disappear group is invited by the man to finish at a spooky villa, Lisa becomes ensnared in a maze of nightmares and death.

Then we fetch something that ISN’T gothic terror — “Roy Colt and Winchester Jack,” a comedy-western. Failed outlaw Roy Colt (Brett Halsey) has decided to become a law-abiding sheriff — until he learns of a cherish procedure to buried gold. Of course, he scurries after it — but to derive his hands on it, he’ll have to beat out an Indian prostitute, a dynamiting Russian Reverand, and his used partner Winchester Jack (Charles Southwood) .

Then it’s “Four Times That Night,” a colourful, campy purchase on Akira Kurosawa’s”Rashomon.” Suave Gianni (Brett Halsey) starts pursuing petrified, chaste Tina (Daniela Giordano), until she agrees to date him. The night ends with his face scratched and her dress shredded — at first sight, you’d contemplate he honest got too grabby, and she fought him off. But there are four different versions of what happened that night, and none of them agree…

Then it’s help to gore and scare, with one of the very first slasher flicks. “Bay Of Blood” opens with the death of a countess and her murdering husband. After their demise, the dwelling is crowded with real-estate agents, entomologists, secret heiresses and sex-mad teens looking for a state to party. Then, of course, they begin dying off… and not honest from one person.

Finally we salvage “Five Dolls For An August Moon,” a remake of Agatha Christie’s “Ten Slight Indians”: Wealthy industrialist George Stark (Teodoro Corrà) gathers a group of friends and associates on his private island, trying to bag a current formula from chemist Fritz Farrell (William Berger) . As the guests accept tangled in sexual and business intrigues, someone starts murdering them…

Unlike many directors, Mario Bava didn’t need massive budgets or CGI to manufacture his shimmering movies — honest agreeable actors and a haunting backdrop. Gothic castles with dungeons, misty forests, psychedelic islands and clubs, eerie villas, and the hazardous streets of Italy are all veteran here, and performances that range from sparkling (Steele) to merely qualified (Halsey) .

In fact, Bava was such a radiant director that he rob a cliche or subpar movie (such as “Baron Blood”), and turn it into something modern and deep. He made consume of misty lighting, eerie camerawork, aesthetic expend of light and shadow, gory deaths and peculiar symbolism. A few also splash in some psychedelic colour and sex. And he was usually able to work in an unexpected, sometimes repulsive twist to each movie’s ending.

“Mario Bava Collection Volume 2″ is a collection of five ample movies, ranging from shimmering to savory. And it’s a pleasant demonstration of Bava’s talents, and the kinds of movies he could undertake — a adore for alarm buffs.

Having objective picked this up, I belief I’d chime in with this second box spot from Anchor Bay. While the comparison will seem peculiar, Like Orson Welles, and this is speaking from public perception, Mario Bava’s debut film, ‘Black Sunday’, was so impressive that many of his subsequent releases were dismissed as sub par or viewed as schlock. Of course, many of these critics overlooked the consistent artistry that could be found throughout Bava’s filmography.

While Volume 1 focused on a number of his most iconic and celebrated films from the early to mid sixties, Volume 2 focus’ on his gradual 60s til mid 70s output, to ample finish I might add. His film, ‘Four Times That Night’ (1968), is a sex comedy with a Rashomon flavored theme. A unexcited mannered man, and a seemingly virtuous woman have a date, which leads to the kind of mishap that triggers three wildly different perspectives, from the man, woman and a spectator. It’s very distinguished a film of the tedious sixties, fun, superb film, but not sizable. A gorgeous part of nudity and sexual affirm, which makes it not accessible for minors, comely warning.

‘5 Dolls For an August Moon’ (1970) features several impressive visual sequences and succeeds due to some expansive art direction. A young scientist with an industrial formula to sell, has invited a group of rich industrialist to a slight island, along with their wives or lovers. Everyone has a range of motives when the guests and scientist commence to be killed off. This even has elements of a discover thriller, via ‘Diabolik’ at positive moments. Apparently this film has divided critics of Bava. It’s a glowing gracious attempt at a non occult thriller.

Bava has been so tied to his reputation as a director of anxiety pictures, people tend to not realize he was varied enough to work in the Western genre, as well as sword and sandal Viking pictures, which makes ‘Roy Colt and Winchester Jack’ (1970) a fun report. A satirical Western with an affectionate nod to Sergio Leone, a pair of good-natured outlaws on a hunt for a fortune in gold. While not a masterpiece, it demonstrates that Bava could work in the Western genre with a twist. Having said that, it’s basically cashing in on the success of ‘Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid’.

Next up, ‘Bay of Blood’ (1971) a.k.a. ‘Twitch of the Death Nerve’. One of the seminal films in the development of the slasher fear genre. Remarkable has been written already about the ways in which Sean Cunningham and Miner borrowed from this film in the making of the first two ‘Friday the 13th’ films. Bava’s film is not for the faint of heart, yet unlike the FT13 films, there’s a plausible motive late most of the killings, the greed of a family inheritance. Feminist film critics will often dismiss Bava for being a misogynist, yet often in Bava’s pictures women are fair as gracious to commit slay as men, aside from the fact that Bava shows a loyal reverence towards women, as complicated souls with desires. Some have dismissed this film and yet, unlike many slasher films where there’s a tranquil focus on the spectacle of violence, one is left not comfortable with the carnage. There’s a sunless, fatalistic, ironic conception and subtext here about how violence feeds on itself, as well as an ecological theme that is highly skeptical for the need for humanity.

For most Bava fan’s, ‘Baron Blood’ (1972) has remained a popular, featuring a beneficial and menacing performance from Joseph Cotton as the resurrected Baron. Elke Sommer’s performance isn’t as memorable as her role in ‘Lisa’, which we’ll net to in a moment. Bava has always excelled at producing Gothic dismay and he delivers this film with a lot of flare. The current relative of Otto von Kleist, the foul Baron of the 16th Century, inadvertently resurrects the Baron from the ragged spell of a witch he burned at the stake. Cotton manages a noble, menacing and slightly off performance until the revelation of his character.

The less that’s said about ‘The House of Exorcism’, the better, in spite of the fact that Lamberto Bava assisted with the re-shoots. ‘Lisa and The Devil’ (1973) is another matter. Lisa, a tourist, sees a fresco of the devil leading away the tiresome, and this triggers her into a Labyrinth of a gloomy narrative. Is this her fevered imagination? Is she being lured by the devil? Is she the resurrected spirit of a lover from another era? ‘Lisa’ is Bava’s most surreal, cryptic and layered film as well as aesthetic. Telly Savalas is unbelievable as a charming, sophisticated and ruthless beelzebubb. Elke Sommer delivers a compelling performance. A sure shatter from the usual supernatural film.

‘Rabid Dogs’ (1974) a.k.a. ‘Kidnapped’, would have been the definitive final statement from Bava had it seen a sterling release. Sadly, when the film’s financier died, his entire estate as well as the print of the film was seized by the Italian Court. A marked stylistic inequity from Bava’s other work, a gritty Euro-Crime drama. During a botched payroll heist, a trio of criminals hijack a woman and a man who is driving a sick child to a hospital. The degradation of the woman is probably one of the most disturbing aspects. A very gritty film that one could discover as a sincere inspiration for a director like Tarantino.

This second station is a slight more thin in the extras. Unlike the special segments produced for the ‘Black Sunday, Girl Who Knew Too Much’, and ‘Black Sabbath’. The only recent special segments added are from ‘Kidnapped’, and that disc was already released as a separate package. Considering, that I have at this writing, Elke Sommer is serene alive, I’m surprised that no novel interviews were conducted for her reflections about working on ‘Baron Blood’ or ‘Lisa’. There are novel commentaries from Bava expert, Tim Lucas for ‘Lisa and the Devil, Baron Blood’ and ‘Bay of Blood’, all friendly, the commentary for ‘Bay of Blood’ is a slight looser for a Lucas commentary. An additional older commentary of ‘Lisa’ with Elke Sommer and Alfredo Leone is included. All of the film prints are expedient and presented in the usual widescreen ratios of 1.85:1 or 1.78:1. The films ‘5 Dolls’ and ‘Four Times’ are included on a duel disc. Many of the films include trailers, radio spots, or Poster and serene galleries. Unfortunately, there’s no production liner notes in any of the sets or updated biographies. Thus, the reason for the rating.

Hopefully, this will do well enough to give Anchor Bay grounds to release more titles. Pardon the length, Bava’s work is frequently unforgettable, dazzling, macabre, disturbing and novel, don’t miss this.

In 1980, Emeric Pressburger said, “A script can only acquire nests in which magic may choose.” With A Canterbury Legend, he and his partner, Michael Powell, created one of the most magical, bright and eccentric movies ever made. The film is far removed from the definite patriotic product they were asked to compose and yet it is one of the most effective evocations of why Britain and America were fighting a favorite enemy.

The spot is so exiguous and off-hand it can’t be taken too seriously. It’s impartial a map to have three new pilgrims stop awhile in the English village of Chillingbourne on Chaucer’s pilgrims road to Canterbury. The three are Alison Smith (Sheila Sim), a land girl from London, advance to work on a farm and who has been notified her fiance has been killed in action; British sergeant Peter Gibbs (Dennis Impress), a trained organist who played organs in cinema houses and is joining his unit on the outskirts of the village; and U. S. sergeant Bob Johnson (true life Sergeant John Sweet, recruited by Powell to play this section), on leave for a few days who got off the deny at the inferior state and who hasn’t heard from his wife for months. Someone in the village is pouring glue on the hair of village girls who have been dating soldiers. As the three leave the vow site during blackout, Alison has glue poured on her hair. The three do their contrivance to the magistrate, Thomas Colpepper (Eric Portman), who seems cool and uninterested in Alison’s problem. The three resolve to secure out by themselves who the mysterious “glueman” really is.

Powell and Pressburger expend this cramped design to evoke a deep feeling of the continuity of life, the sense that history is objective as remarkable a portion of what is now as what has been. Michael Powell’s lean kind of humor is musty to glimpse the life of the village and the interaction of the American sergeant with village people. The point of the movie the government wanted was to prove that Britain and the U.S. shared the same values in the fight against Germany. At the time the movie was made, England was filling up with American G.I.s as the months leading to the 1944 invasion of Normandy sped by and there was great tension. Powell and Pressburger deal with this stutter in a variety of subtle ways, most affectingly when Sergeant Johnson finds himself in a conversation with an aging carpenter. They accept they surprisingly have worthy in approved. They both know wood and care for craftsmanship. The extinct man, suspicious at first of this American, winds up captivating him to dinner.

But the movie is far more about values. That Colpepper is the glueman is clear early in the movie (this is no spoiler), yet why does he do it? He’s no captive of the past. He speaks, however, for the continuance of values and history, that they are a fragment of us. Values and history give us strength and give worth to our lives and our work today. He tries to clarify this one afternoon to Alison. “There is more than one scheme of getting halt to your ancestors,” he tells her. “Follow the Stale Road and as you do, reflect of them; they climbed Chillingbourne Hill unbiased as you did. They sweated and paused for breath fair as you did today. And when you survey the bluebells in the spring and the wild thyme, and the broom and the heather, you’re seeing what their eyes saw. You ford the same rivers, the same birds singing. And when you lie flat on your relieve and rest, and gape the clouds sailing as I often do, you’re so discontinuance to those other people, that you can hear the thrumming of the hoofs of their horses, and the sound of the wheels on the road, and their laughter, and talk, and the music of the instruments they carried. And they turned the bend in the road, where they too saw the towers of Canterbury. I feel I have only to turn my head to peruse them on the road gradual me.”

In their gain procedure, unbiased as with Chaucer’s pilgrims seeking blessings and miracles, Alison, Bob and Peter are pilgrims, too. On their intention to Canterbury at last, Peter plans to give the evidence they discovered about the glueman to the police. Alison will collect the caravan she and her fiance had stayed in. Bob will meet a friend and gaze the cathedral. They will earn unexpected blessings which are as emotional for us as they are to the three. Even Colpepper finds a blessing. The movie’s commentator, British film historian Ian Christie, says, “The characters are searching, but they don’t know for what. The landscapes they disappear through are rich in associations but they are often ignorant of these, and so their progress is beefy of uncertainty, which we are encouraged to part.” Powell and Pressburger managed to manufacture, from what was asked to be a simple propaganda movie, a film which has turned out to be an eccentric masterpiece. If in doubt, objective glimpse the opening when Chaucer’s pilgrims are on their plot to Canterbury and a hunting hawk is released. It soars into the sky, up and up, turning and twisting, and before we can register it, the dot that was a hawk has become a Spitfire, circling and twisting down towards us, and we’re in wartime Britain in 1943.

I’ve watched this movie several times on VHS tape and the Station 2 DVD. I’d always considered it one of Powell and Pressburger’s near-great films. After watching twice Criterion’s immaculate DVD presentation, which for the first time brings out the subtleties of the night sequences and makes evident how brilliant and warm the murky and white photography was, I’ve changed my mind. I unreservedly infamous A Canterbury Story with the other large and ample, quirky and completely unusual Powell and Pressburger films:

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943) is a one-of-a-kind peek at a life and how it changed but also held good to “Englishness.” New and innovative, with astronomical performances by Roger Livesey and Anton Walbrook. Unbelievable that it was commissioned as a propaganda section during WWII and damage up with Churchill having a fit over it. Available from Criterion.

A Canterbury Memoir (1944)

I Know Where I’m Going (1945) is one of the most romantic films ever made, and without an iota of sentimentality. Wendy Hiller and Roger Livesey. Available from Criterion.

A Matter of Life and Death (1946) is a peculiar and deeply affecting reflection on like and life and death. David Niven, Kim Hunter and Roger Livesey.

Black Narcissus (1947) is an intense and fair film about repressed feelings, frustration and the exotic. Deborah Kerr and David Farrar. Available from Criterion.

The Red Shoes (1948) is a lush, ravishing, mesmerizing and melodramatic epic of torn feelings and obsession. The ballet of the Red Shoes is almost 60 years dilapidated and has yet to be bettered as an extended dance sequence in a movie. Anton Walbrook and Moira Shearer. Available from Criterion.

By 1943, with The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, Michael Powell, doing the directing, and Emeric Pressburger, doing the writing, had become The Archers, agreeing to retract joint and equal credit for the writing, directing and producing of their movies. What movies they were. I can’t judge of any individual or pair of movie makers who were responsible for so many creative, idiosyncratic, different and objective lifeless mammoth films as these two.

The Criterion presentation is immaculate. The two-disc DVD position includes an fine commentary by Ian Christie and a number of extras. Some of these include a novel video interview with Sheila Sim, a documentary about John Sweet and a documentary visiting the film locations. Included is a booklet with distinguished film essays.

A weird, numinous miniature gem of a movie, shot in and around a luftwaffe-devastated Canterbury in the run-up to D Day, 1945. Famed director Michael Powell returns to his beloved home City to update the Canterbury Tales – 3 modern-day “pilgrims” – a Land Girl, US GI & British soldier, brought together by their hunt for the mysterious “glue man” who pours glue on local girls who date soldiers – all receive their “blessings”, as indeed does the glue man. The fabulous cloudscapes & tall skies of East Kent are attractive backdrops to crucial scenes & the fabulous & typical Powell/Pressburger/Renoir utilize of light throughout adds to the air of magical realism. Very few thrillers stand out like Martin Scorsese’s “Cape Terror.” It’s a unsightly traipse that frightens us to the very core. It shakes you violently and paints an intense portray of revenge that is taken to a whole different level. This is a shadowy and brutal film that doesn’t let you off easy for a single second.

Attorney Sam Bowden appears to have the perfect life upon simple examination. He has a loving wife and daughter, a very nice home, and a splendid successful and providing career. Things occupy a drastic turn when Max Cady is released from prison after serving a term of fourteen years. Cady was once represented by Bowden and is now looking for a microscopic payback, as he feels that his old attorney didn’t do everything he possibly could to withhold him out of prison. Now, Sam must realize the show peril that is before him, as not only is his life in absolute danger–but also his family and everybody else he loves and cares for. The stakes have never been higher.

This is an absolutely disturbing film that pulls no punches. It’s a very uneasy movie to seek, and yet it is so well done that it is hard NOT to witness. Robert De Niro is extremely repugnant as the vengeful “Max Cady” who is out and about, looking to decide the fetch. This is definitely a signature role for De Niro, as this would be one of his many roles that he will be remembered for most. Prick Nolte also gives a mighty performance that adds a human quality to his character. The movie is well written and is perfectly executed frame by frame. It plays like a Hitchcock film on ecstasy. Martin Scorsese flawlessly directs this horrifying relate and knows what strings to pull to find a reaction from us. Be warned, this is not a movie for those who have obsolete stomachs or faint hearts.

The DVD does a sparkling job when it comes to doing the movie the justice that it deserves. The relate quality is great–it is such a relief that I don’t have to deal with the poor laserdisc version that had the most horrendous record quality. The sound quality is also spacious, and you even obtain the chance to study it in DTS, if your system carries it. There are some frigid extras for DVD fanatics, with extras like featurettes, deleted scenes, production notes, a theatrical trailer and more. Surely, there will be some who will want more for a film of this caliber, but the overall presentation is more than generous.

“Cape Anxiety” is a relentless thriller that is monstrous and suspenseful. The movie has an friendly cast, a stout script, and an extremely talented director leisurely it all. Again, the movie is very intense and isn’t recommended for those who have ragged hearts and don’t like scenes with graphic and disturbing violence. This is definitely a classic that will always be around in the sparkling world of cinema. -Michael Crane

I fair watched this movie for the first time in a number of years and I’d forgotten how truly expansive it is. I’d been waiting for the DVD to arrive out. Cape Awe is a movie that needs to be seen in letterbox. In the documentary, Scorsese says it was the first time he filmed anamorphic because he’d hoped that widescreen televisions would soon be coming out.

What makes the DVD substantial is the long “making-of” documentary on disc 2. In it, Scorsese, all the actors, and the broad screenwriter Wesley Strick go into grand detail of every facet of the film and how the project evolved over the years (including the noted “thumb-sucking” scene) . I’ve read the book “The Executioners” upon which the movie is based, and I’m familiar with the modern Peck/Mitchum version and I have to say that this film is the best of the three. Don’t procure me unfavorable – the current Cape Dismay is a gargantuan movie and this version couldn’t exist without it. However, this film is exponentially more complex and disturbing. The new tale was a straightforward Trustworthy Guy/Bad Guy conflict. Nowhere was there a villain like the tattooed, Bible-quoting, Henry Miller-reading Max Cady as portrayed by DeNiro. Another especially inspired touch was to withhold Bernard Herman’s modern accumulate.

Whereas a zillion “psychological thrillers” have advance and gone since Cape Alarm came out, they have been forgotten and this remains a classic.
